Burlesque Workshop Intensive

November 19 2011, noon-6 pm $75

Beginners Welcome!

Location: 440 Studios, Studio 3D, 3rd Floor. 440 Lafayette St, Manhattan. Directions.
Come directly to the studio for the class.
Do not drop in--preregistration is required.

If you're thinking about performing and have ideas for acts, this workshop is for you! We've been putting burlesque performers onstage for nearly a decade, and some of New York's newest burlesque stars started with this workshop. Plus, it's a ton of fun even if you never decide to perform!

Get a crash course in basic choreography, burlesque style striptease (from whatever you're wearing!), how to choose music, costume, and character! You'll even choose a burlesque stage name for the class.

You will need to bring music you like and/or have considered performing to, a notebook, and a copy of The Burlesque Handbook. We also recommend bringing any costume pieces you may be considering.

Performance is not required but you will have the option to perform in a student showcase on a later date, TBD.

Although you can learn from this workshop if you have no idea at all what you'd like to do, you should bring one to three pieces of music you like. If you are planning to do a classic striptease routine, please bring some of the music and costume you are considering if you have them. To learn the moves of chair dance, fan dance, etc., take the Essential Burlesque Series.

This is a 6-hour intensive on how to put together a burlesque routine. We'll talk about coming up with your stage name, finding inspiration, choosing music, putting together a costume, and choreographing a routine! We'll workshop your ideas and offer extensive resources to help you get your number together quickly. At NYSB you will be learning from the most experienced teachers and entertainers in burlesque! We've put hundreds of performers onstage, many of whom have gone on to award-winning careers in burlesque!

Bring whatever you've got--from an idea and a bit of music to a full routine you want to workshop. It is highly recommended that you bring a few pieces of music you have thought you might use for a number on a cd, even if you have nothing solidly planned for a number, as music selection will be discussed extensively.

You will need to bring a notebook and a copy of The Burlesque Handbook to this class. We will be referring to all of it, but primarily to chapters 1, 5, 6, and 7.

In NYC, you can purchase the book at Lola Star, Enz's, Coco de Mer, or Bluestockings bookstore. It will not be available for sale in the class.
