Your Fine Feathered Friends: Fan-dancing, Classic and New.
The New York School of Burlesque presents its popular fan
dance class! Learn how to handle one of the most sensual and glamourous props in
burlesque with grace and style. You'll learn about the history of the fan dance, the
construction of fans, feather care and maintenance, how to make fans, and where to buy them. You'll
learn a series of moves and techniques for using your fans to conceal,
reveal, and frame yourself. Both classical and neo-classical use will
be discussed.
We will learn hand positions with small fans, and then you'll get up on the gorgeous velvet-curtained stage with a pair of my big ostrich fans to try them out for yourself. Small marabou fans will be available in class, but bring a pair of your own fans if you have them.
If you're shopping, check out http://www.pearlriver.com for silk and paper fans and http://www.thefeatherplace.com for all kinds of feather fans. The least expensive place I know of from which to buy a pair of the large ostrich feather fans is ostrich.com.
Wear workout clothes and shoes you like to dance in.
Bonus: The moves involved in fan-dancing can lengthen and tighten upper arm muscles!
