November 30: It's our annual crash course in burlesque dance! This day-long workshop features 3 sections of the Essential Burlesque Series, all set into a one-day program. Learn the essentials of Classic Moves, Tassel-Twirling, Chair Dance, Fan Dance, Glove Peels, and More! Many of the most popular performers in New York got their start in this class. While it's fun for nonperformers, it's perfect for curious beginners, a refresher for performers, and for experienced dancers curious about the vocabulary of burlesque movement.
Learn the moves that make burlesque so much fun! You'll be shimmying, peeling, and rocking it, performing an entire burlesque striptease routine. Learn AUTHENTIC burlesque! New York School of Burlesque Headmistress Jo Weldon has learned directly from the fierce and fabulous ladies who performed during the magical golden age of twentieth century striptease, and taught these movements, principles and styles to NYSB instructors.

The class will be conducted to fabulous classic burlesque music!
Dress for movement and bring a pair of shoes you like to dance in. We provide boas, gloves, tassels, and fans to borrow for the class.

Women only and nonbinary only.

If you want a full crash course in one weekend, we recommend also taking the crash course in Burlesque Performance Fundamentals on December 1, described below.

December 1: Performance Fundamentals. Thinking about performing? Get a crash course in Burlesque Act Development! You'll learn about coming up with an effective stage name, generating ideas, getting into character, choosing music, developing choreography, incorporating theatrical striptease, and basic costuming techniques and concerns.

Becoming Burlesque: Stage Name and Persona
Setting the Tone: How to Find the Perfect Music
Costume Basics: Dressing to Undress
Striptease: Fantastic Peels and Reveals
Begin and End With a Bang
Tips for Getting Booked
Sensuality, Confidence, Self-Invention, and Fun!

If you have ideas for acts, this workshop is for you! It's an ideal precursor to the principles that will be covered in acction in the Act Development series in January. Bring whatever you've got--from an idea and a bit of music to a full routine you want to workshop. You will need to bring music you like and/or have considered performing to, a notebook, a hoodie or button-down shirt, and a copy of The Burlesque Handbook. You can buy it online through In NYC, you can purchase the book at Enz's, Exit 9, or Bluestockings bookstore. It will not be available for sale in the class. We also recommend bringing any costume pieces you may be considering.

Although you can learn from this workshop if you have no idea at all what you'd like to do, you should bring one to three pieces of music you like. If you are planning to do a classic striptease routine, please bring some of the music and costume you are considering if you have them. To learn classic burlesque movement, showgirl strutting, tassel twirling, and the moves of chair dance and fan dance, take the November 30 workshop.

Wear close-fitting clothes that you can move in, as you would to take a dance or yoga class. Although we take our shoes off to enter the space, you can bring shoes you plan to use in performance with you. We recommend wearing cute socks!

You may bring a snack but not a meal. We will take a late lunch break midday on November 30 but not December 1. You may bring beverages but you must take all your garbage out with you.

Performance is not required, since numbers are not developed here, but you will have the option to perform in a student showcase on a later date, TBD. We also receommend taking the Act Development series with Jo Weldon in January 2020 or Jezebel Express in March 2020.
