Which Classes Are Right For You?

Burlesque Act Development
Online in September 2020

Get ready to create your own burlesque routine with the Author of The Burlesque Handbook and Headmistress of The New York School of Burlesque, Jo Weldon!

Concludes with an online student showcase.

Burlesque gives performers complete control over all the elements of their numbers, allowing for infinite self-discovery. This series will take you through the development of your routines from inspiration to performance, with guidance along the way from one of the most experienced burlesque instructors on the globe.

Unique to Jo's classes:
Add-on for $49:
For the duration of this series you will have access to recordings of previous classes from The Essential Burlesque Series, The New York School of Burlesque Book Club, The Hours of Seduction, and The Burlesque Handbook Series, as well as the followup documents to classes and the school's library of articles on all of our topics from inspiration to dance to making pasties to how to get book and how to produce shows. You can cover topics at your leisure, watching or just listening. Videos range from 40 minutes to 90 minutes long and are perfect for driving or listening to during a soaking bath.

Most of our teachers are internationally acclaimed performers, but there is no pressure on students to perform! This is a supportive and welcoming environment for all. If you just want to experience the classes, take anything you like! Most of our classes are geared toward people who have little burlesque experience, or want refreshers for what they know.

Many of our students have gone on to international careers! If you're thinking about performing, whether just once for the experience or you want to put in the years and commitment to becoming a fulltime burlesque performer, you're in the right place to get started.

Here is a list of our core classes:

Basic Burlesque: Flirting with Burlesque
Learn a group routine featuring basic burlesque movement
10 months a year, students have options to perform a group number in a showcase
Burlesque 101: Essential Burlesque
In this 4-week series, students learn the psychology of striptease, a chair dance, a fan dance, and a classic routine with boas, gloves, and tassels
11 months a year plus intensive in December
Burlesque 201: Performance Fundamentals
Students learn how burlesque performers come up with stage names, choose music, assemble costumes, and create choreography
this series is not offered every month -- don't delay!
Burlesque 301: Act Development
Develop a solo routine with the guidance of an expert instructor and the support of your classmates
concludes in a solo student performance in a showcase
5 times a year plus Coney Island Master Class in July
Required Reading: The Burlesque Handbook
The Burlesque Handbook is considered the bible of burlesque around the world! It's the perfect companion to any burlesque classes, and for less than $10 you can start your education immediately.

You don't have to take classes in the order above. However, you do need to know the principles in Essential Burlesque and Performance Fundamentals to take Act Development. In EB and PF you learn; in AD you apply your new knowledge and skills. In Act Development you'll workshop your way through a number with expert guidance and a community of support, then perform in a showcase, but you won't review what took place in EB and PF.

If you want to speed up your learning curve, or you're an experienced performer who wants choreography and act development assistance, our instructors are all available for one-on-one private coaching and act development. We also to teach private group lessons for bachelorette parties and other gatherings. Email schoolofburlesque@gmail.com for more information.

Please note, classes are 18+, but you must be 21+ to attend or perform in our showcases.

Our classes are geared toward women and femmes. If you are masculine-presenting, get in touch and we will make sure you find which of our classes are comfortable for you.

SPECIALTY CLASSES
See our index page for more classes!
We run specialty classes on one or two Saturdays per month, often featuring traveling instructors, on an irregular basis, many of which do not repeat. There is no prerequisite for most of these classes, and information about each is specifically detailed in the indivual class listings. They are often one-time offers from traveling instructors, so feel free to take those at any time, as you may not have another opportunity in NYC. Those teachers will not be preparing you for a performance but they will be teaching skills that will broaden your repertoire and improve your performance ability, as well as giving you an opportunity to network with influential burlesque figures.

Our instructors are all available for one-on-one private coaching and act development. Email schoolofburlesque@gmail.com for more information.

We produce approximately 4-6 showcases a year. We may occasionally present additional showcases as the occasion warrants. We also produce the Coney Island Master Class in Burlesque every summer, with its own special showcase in Coney Island.

We welcome all styles of burlesque, from showgirl to comedy to political. However, there are some limitations on what solo performers can do in our shows. We are not allowed to have full nudity. We prefer no liquids, glitter spills, or wax or food on the stage. We will not help develop or present acts we believe have content offensive to marginalized groups, such as cultural appropriation.
