Thinking About Performing?

Many of our students have gone on to international careers! If you're thinking about performing, whether just once for the experience or you want to put in the years and commitment to becoming a fulltime burlesque performer, you're in the right place to get started.
BR> HOW TO PERFORM IN A NEW YORK SCHOOL OF BURLESQUE SHOWCASE:

Only those who have taken classes at NYSB may take part in our student showcases.
The calendar for all classes is at the bottom of the page.

The best classes to take first if you are thinking of getting on a performance track are Flirting with Burlesque, Essential Burlesque, and Act Development. In Flirting with Burlesque you will learn a routine with a group of students. If you want to do a solo, you should take Essential Burlesque and Act Development. We don’t require that you take Essential Burlesque before Act Development, but it is very highly recommended, as you will not be taught tassel twirling, fan dance, basic stage presence, striptease psychology, or chair dance in Act Development, and you may want those skills. You can take Flirting, Essential Burlesque, and Act Development all at the same time if your schedule permits!

We run specialty classes on Saturdays, often featuring traveling instructors, on an irregular basis, and these will also qualify you to perform in a showcase. There is no prerequisite for most of these classes, and information about each is specifically detailed in the indivual class listings. Feel free to take those at any time. Those teachers will not be preparing you for a performance but they will be teaching skills that will broaden your skill set and improve your performance ability.

Our instructors are also available for one-on-one private coaching and act development. Email schoolofburlesque@gmail.com for more information.

Showcase performance opportunities are announced via the NYSB mailing list, as well as on New York School of Burlesque Facebook and Twitter feeds, so be sure to follow everything!

If you are interested in performing send an email in a new window (as in, not part of an email thread or a reply to an email we’ve sent) with the subject line “Student Showcase” and, if applicable, the date you wish to perform. (i.e. “Student Showcase June 2018”). This helps us keep track of your emails so we don’t lose you in the shuffle of a long email thread. If you do not hear back from us in a timely fashion, feel free to send the email again.

We produce approximately 10 showcases a year, of two main types:

1) Open Showcases (4-6 times per year)
Hosted by Jo Weldon. Open to all students who have taken classes of any kind at NYSB and have developed their own routines.
Primarily for students who are performing for the first time or debuting a new act. Students are responsible for their own ideas, costuming, and act creation. In addition to solo numbers, these showcases may also feature group routines, as taught in classes like "Flirting with Burlesque" and "Perlesque with guest instructor Perle Noire." We ask that you do not book yourself to perform in these if you are performing in another show within a week of the showcase, either before or after.

2) Act Development Series Showcases (4-6 times per year)
The culmination of our “Beginner Act Development” series (offered 4 times a year), or any of our other multi-week act development series. (“Performance Art Burlesque,” “Boylesque,” or “Intermediate Burlesque.”) These showcases are generally open ONLY to students who are enrolled in that series. Occasionally, a group act will also be featured. Usually hosted by the series instructor (such as Darlinda Just Darlinda, Dirty Martini, or Jezebel Express.) We also occasionally present additional showcases as the occasion warrants. We present the Coney Island Master Class in Burlesque every summer, with a special showcase in Coney Island.
